A confusão número um

Say as palavras. Tell a alguém.

say

Say — foco no que se diz

Não pede pessoa. Se quiser citar a pessoa, use say to. Nunca "say me".

She said (that) she was busy.
He said to me, "Wait."
tell

Tell — sempre com a pessoa

tell + alguém + algo. Vem em expressões fixas: tell the truth, a lie, a story, the time.

Tell me what happened.
She told us a secret.
! Regra de bolso: tell precisa de um "alguém". Say não. "Tell me" ✓ · "Say me" ✗.

Formal vs conversa

Speak é mais formal. Talk é bate-papo.

speak

Speak — formal & idiomas

Telefonemas, situações formais, e sempre para idiomas. speak to / with someone.

Could I speak to the manager?
She speaks three languages.
talk

Talk — informal & mútuo

Conversa do dia a dia, troca de ideias. talk to / with someone about something.

Let's talk about your plans.
We talked all night.

Na prática, speak e talk se sobrepõem muito. A diferença é de registro: speak soa mais sério/formal; talk soa mais leve e recíproco.
